Reminders About Telephone Lines

A modem can be used with most standard voice telephone lines.

Home Phone Lines

There are a few things you need to know if you use your home phone line to connect to the campus network:

You might consider getting a second telephone line for your modem if you plan to connect often.

Campus Phone Lines

On-campus use of the dial-in modem pools is discouraged in buildings where direct connections to the campus network are an option. Instead, you can arrange for a campus network connection by contacting UW Technology Network Installation at install@u.washington.edu or 206-543-5068.

Hotel Phone Lines

If you want to connect to the campus network from the phone in your hotel, you should inquire when you reserve your room whether or not the hotel offers an "RJ-11 analog data port" in the room. Verify this information again when you check in.

WARNING! Many hotels use digital telephone systems, and if you plug your modem into a jack intended for the digital phone, it may cause damage to your modem. If you are not sure whether or not to use your modem, ask at your hotel.
