Classified Non-Union Leave
Personal Holiday
UNDERSTAND
The personal holiday is a paid leave day an employee can use at a time mutually agreeable to the employee and the supervisor. Monthly-paid classified non-union employees are entitled to one (1) paid personal holiday each calendar year in addition to regularly scheduled state holidays.
Eligibility
Classified non-union employees are eligible to use the personal holiday as long as they are scheduled to be, or have been, continuously employed by the State of Washington for at least four (4) months. The personal holiday may be taken at any time in the calendar year.
Using the Personal Holiday
- The personal holiday is paid at a rate equivalent to the FTE in effect at the time the holiday is taken (e.g., 100% FTE = 8 hrs., 75% FTE = 6 hrs., 50% FTE = 4 hrs.).
- The personal holiday should be used as 1 full day.
- The personal holiday can only be split into several partial days off if it is requested for the following:
- To care for a child with a health condition that requires treatment or supervision.
- To care for a spouse, parent, parent-in-law or grandparent of the employee who has a serious health condition or an emergency health condition.
- To be donated as shared leave.
- When exhausting all paid leave prior to a leave of absence without pay (LWOP).
- Any portion of the personal holiday that remains and is not used for the above purposes must be taken by the employee as one absence not to exceed the work shift on the day of absence.
- If the personal holiday is not used by the end of the calendar year, it is forfeited. The personal holiday cannot be cashed out.
- If the employee requests to use the personal holiday before the end of the year and is denied, the personal holiday can be carried over.
- If a classified non-union employee moves from one staff position to another within the University, or moves without a break in service to a staff position at another State agency, the unused personal holiday will transfer with the employee.
- Employees who separate from the University are not paid for any unused personal holiday.
ACT
If you wish to use your personal holiday and meet the eligibility requirements outlined above, you will need to follow your department’s procedures for requesting and taking time off from work.
