Along with participating in required orientation activities, you may choose to pursue other events and opportunities to deepen your understanding of the UW and to help you succeed in your new position.

Beyond orientation, as a new employee there are a number of practices you can follow to maximize your on-the-job success and lay the foundation for future career growth.

Ask questions and clarify expectations as needed
Solicit feedback from your managers and peers
Meet deadlines and fulfill commitments -- or, if needed, renegotiate ahead of time
Set goals for learning your new position and for growing in your position
Recognize contributions and assistance provided by others in your department
Work to uphold the UW’s values: integrity, diversity, excellence, collaboration, innovation, and respect

Succeeding at your job may require you to learn new concepts and develop new skills. POD’s Quarterly Courses include a number of foundational courses in key areas.

Interpersonal and Written Communications: Suggested courses include Communications, Developing Assertiveness Skills, Better Business Writing, and Grammar Essentials.
Fiscal Procedures and Management: Suggested courses include Foundations of Fiscal Reporting, Travel Process and Procedures, and Fundamentals of Grant and Contract Management.
Human Resources Administration: Suggested courses include Leave Record Maintenance, Compensation: The Basics, and Interviewing for Excellence.
Supervision: Suggested courses include Supervision Basics, Learning to Lead, and Supervising in a Diverse Workplace.

In addition, if you are a new supervisor, you may have the opportunity to participate in the Strategic Leadership Program.
