Lactation Stations

UNDERSTAND

If you are a breastfeeding mother attending school or working at the UW, you'll be glad to know about the many on-site lactation stations. While it may be hard to leave your baby, it should be easy to maintain your milk supply with the hospital-quality, electric double pumps available for your use at the stations. Most women find it takes less than 15 minutes to express their milk. Some of the lactation stations also provide privacy for mothers who have their own hand- or battery-operated pumps.

ACT

  1. Call the lactation station that’s most convenient for you and get information and a brief orientation.
  2. Obtain a universal, double pumping kit. Please note that you must have a "Universal Kit" for use with a Medela Classic Pump, either Medela or Ameda/Egnell brands for all but the Sieg Hall lactation station. (Kits designed for the Medela "Lactina" or "Pump In Style" pumps do NOT WORK with the Medela Classic Pump. Extra pieces are needed and are available directly from the manufacturer or from some local breast pump suppliers). You will need a Medela "Symphony" kit for the Sieg Hall pump. If you are not sure what you need, please call UWMC Lactation Services (206-598-4628) at least two WEEKS BEFORE you need to use the pump. The kits are available at Seattle area merchants, including:
    • Hall Health Pharmacy (206-685-1021) has both Universal and Symphony double pumping systems.
    • Birth and Beyond (206-324-4831) has both Universal and Symphony double pumping systems, as well as adapter kit parts.
    • Sandpoint Clinic Pharmacy (206-523-5700) has Universal double pumping systems.
    • Village Maternity (206-523-5167) has Universal double pumping systems.
    • View Ridge Pharmacy (206-524-1800) has Universal double pumping systems.
    • For additional locations near you, call Medela at 1-800-435-8316. If you choose to borrow a kit from another breast-feeding mother, you will need to sterilize it in boiling water for at least 10 minutes before you use it.
  3. Reserve your use session/s, for 30 minutes at Hall Health, Health Sciences, Roosevelt Clinic, and Sieg Hall, or 20 minutes at UWMC. If the room is not already reserved, you may use it on a first-come, first-served basis. (You may reserve more than one slot per day, but you may not reserve consecutive slots.)
  4. After using a pump, wipe it with the recommended product (Wescodyne or similar, if provided) and clean up any spills.
  5. Do not leave your pump kit in the room, except at Hall Health and Sieg Hall where lockers are available.
